Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
Panic gripped Gulshan Colony in Anandpur, Kolkata, on Saturday after multiple rounds of firing created chaos in the locality. As bullets rang out, shopkeepers hurriedly shut down their stores while residents scrambled for safety, recalling scenes more familiar to parts of Uttar Pradesh or Bihar.
Police moved swiftly and arrested four men in connection with the incident. The accused have been identified as Mohammad Sajid (29), Ahmed Hussain alias Mohammad Madhu (43), Raja Khan (35), and Md. Ambar alias Md. Nafees. Several weapons were seized during the operation.
Following the arrests, normalcy has gradually returned to the colony. Shops have reopened and transport services are operating, though a sense of unease lingers. To maintain law and order, police have set up a barricade near a biryani shop linked to the probe, and a permanent police picket has been stationed at the Gulshan Colony auto stand.
Authorities have assured strict surveillance in the area, with further investigation underway to uncover the motive behind the firing and possible gang links.
